An African D.R.C. Congo Yombe Phemba maternity / guardian figure sculpture (19th Century) carved wood, copper, feather, cowrie shell depicting a mother holding a spirit child or nkisi with two Yaka Biteki Power Figures adorned on each arm. Each power figure has a crown of feather with copper clad border and arms holding onto the magic potion chamber on their stomach. The chambers have copper clad surround glass viewing windows and there is some material inside. The mother or phemba has a crown of feathers with inset cowrie shell border and copper clad and carved scarification around the face and neck and carved features throughout. The mouth is agape with the tongue and teeth showing, almond shaped eyes, accentuated neck and torso.
